Frequently Asked Questions
Here is a listing of our most frequently asked questions and answers...
What is the purpose of a ceiling fan?
A ceiling fan is used to circulate the air throughout a room or area. Ceiling fans help cool you in the summer with a gentle downdraft creating a comfortable wind chill effect. In the winter, ceiling fans push heated air from the ceiling either indirectly up, or down. Either way the heat that gathers at the ceiling gets recycled, thus reducing the demand for more heat from the furnace.
What do I look for when purchasing a fan?
Many different fans are available these days, with a great degree of different options, styles, designs and prices. When you buy a ceiling fan you are paying for three things….quality and features, design/style and name recognition. Other things to look for are CFM (“cubic feet per minute”)… the higher the CFM rating, the more air the fan moves because of the motor efficiency rating and size, blade pitch, weight and of course, warranty. With more than 250 fans on display, we are certain that just the right fan for your room can be seen in one of our six spacious showrooms.
What size downrod will I need for a high ceiling?
This depends on the height of the ceiling and also whether you have a flat ceiling or a cathedral, sloped or beam ceiling. Our shop can prepare and wire down rods up to 20 feet in length. And yes, a new safety cable is always installed on longer downrods.
What size fan will I need?
- up to 65 square feet = 29”
- up to 100 square feet = 42”
- up to 225 square feet = 52”
Based on the shape of the room, ceiling height, window locations, sources of heat your preference may vary. If the room size and ceiling height permit, we suggest selecting a larger fan so that air is circulated at a comfortable volume on the lower speeds. This reduces energy consumption while at the same time circulating a larger volume of air.
Do all fans come with a light?
Not all fans come with lights…. some do…. otherwise you can choose your fan and light fixture separately. Our service department can fit a wide range of lights to a large selection of fans. So we can offer you an excellent range of adaptability.
Can I operate the fan with a remote control?
Yes….. remotes come with many fans or can be added to a fan.
What are my control options?
Depending on the application……..you can use a wall control or remote control. We do not recommend using light dimmers as motor speed controllers. Find out more about accessories in our "accessories" section.
Will my fan and light operate independently?
Yes….. this can be done by using the pull-chain switch on the fan or using remote or wall control.
Is five blades better? More efficient?
No … it all depends on the size of the motor and the pitch on the blade.
What makes a fan Energy Star?
Energy Star fans are about 50% more efficient that conventional fan/light combinations and move air up to 20% more efficiently than standard ceiling fans.

What is the use for a fan mounted outside, such as on a porch?
Fans are used outdoors to create a breeze and to keep the bugs away. They are excellent for drying off the porch after a rain, and drying out pillows that may be damp.
What sort of fan is recommended?
A ‘damp’ or ‘wet location’ fan is recommended. Damp rating used only for fans installed under a protected roof, wet rated for fans that maybe installed in a gazebo or other outdoor location where the fan may be exposed to rain.
Should I match the fan with my furniture or just blend in with the ceiling?
This is the individual’s choice……
- Minimize the fan appearance with the same colour as the ceiling.
- Match blade material and finish to complement room décor.
- Match fan/light fixture to complement room décor.
